Novak Djokovic made a winning return at Wimbledon beating Pedro Cachin in straight sets despite not playing his best.
Novak Djokovic began his title defence by traditionally opening play on the Centre Court. He faced an inexperienced player on the grass and it showed as the Argentine failed to match Djokovic's level when it mattered the most.
Djokovic didn't play his best match but he did enough to win it. It was expected that he would be a bit rusty as he played only one match on grass and it was an exhibition match in Hurlingham, which isn't an official ATP event.
It was a solid performance. I know I can always play better, but at the same time after a long clay court season, coming into Wimbledon without any preparation tournament, lead-up event, any official match on grass, it was kind of expected I still would probably not be in my 100% of the level of my tennis.
There is no doubt for Djokovic that his level will improve. We've seen it many times by now. He'll play himself into shape and likely end up as the champion. That's the plan at least and having had previous experience with that will help him.
I've been in these situations before, so hopefully as the tournament progresses I'll raise my level as well.
It was a strange match in some ways as there was a rain delay that lasted a long time. Djokovic referenced it after the match as an odd situation but ultimately he was simply glad to finish the match without complications.
Great to finish the match today, as well. A little bit of strange circumstances with the roof being closed, and us delaying the match for almost an hour and a half. It's amazing, amazing to be back to a dream tournament, and to be able to get the first match out of the way.
