Djokovic's US 'Preparations' Already Underway, According to Ivanisevic

Novak Djokovic's coach Goran Ivanisevic has provided an update on the 23-time Grand Slam winner's schedule ahead of the US Open.

Djokovic's last match was the five-set epic against Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, which the Serbian eventually lost. Rather than jumping straight back into the action, Djokovic decided to take a break and withdrew from the 2023 Canadian Open in Toronto due to fatigue.

However, the 36-year-old is expected to get back on the court at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters as he starts to increase his preparations for a US Open return. Also, according to Ivanisevic, during an interview with Sportske Novosti, Djokovic has already begun his work towards the US Open in September.

"He had a bit of a break, but now the preparations for the US tour are starting. Preparations begin at the end of the week, he's slowly starting with the fitness, and then the tennis. I don't know exactly, the week after, mid-next month, he will leave for Cincinnati."

Djokovic's scheduled appearance at the ATP 1000 event in Cincinnati will mark his return to the United States for the first time since 2021, when he lost the final to Danill Medvedev. Since then, Djokovic has been unable to enter the country due to his unvaccinated status, which didn't comply with US covid-19 protocols, but recent rule changes mean he can now travel to the North American nation.

Ultimately, the 36-year-old will be targetting a shot at his third Grand Slam of the 2023 season at Flushing Meadows this year. So far, Djokovic has won the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and he has already shared his intentions to challenge Alcaraz once again at the fourth major of the season.

Djokovic has had plenty of prior success at the US Open across his 18-year career. The Serbian player has won the title three times and his most recent success in New York came in 2018 when he defeated Juan Martin del Potro.
