Djokovic Added: After Backlash, Wimbledon Changes Controversial Poster

| by Alfredo Bassanelli

The power of social media proved itself once more as Novak Djokovic was added to Wimbledon promotional posters following heavy backlash on social media.

If you haven't followed the story, Djokovic was infamously left off from Wimbledon's promotional photos for this year. Basically, the only promo material that featured Djokovic was the video which barely had him in it.

The posters didn't feature him at all with the accompanying statement leaving him off as well. To be fair, Elena Rybakina as the defending champion was also barely featured. It left many dumbfounded especially when it comes to Djokovic who won the event 7 times, and four times in the last four editions of it.

It became viral news rather quickly on social media and it seems like Wimbledon got the memo. New promotional posters were created and they include both Djokovic and Rybakina, and the tournament chose it as their header photo on their official Twitter account.

Posters like the one Wimbledon made generally feature the defending champions so it made very little sense to actually have posters with retired players but not those that managed to lift the trophy last year.

Some fans even speculated whether it was on purpose. There have been long-time speculations about the anti-Djokovic sentiment in the UK generally and in Wimbledon. Things like this certainly don't squash those rumours and the Rybakina part is rather confusing as well.

A very harmless player who barely talks, Rybakina is ethnically Russian though. Even if she plays for Kazakhstan and is publicly against the war in Ukraine, Rybakina is still ethnically Russian which to some makes her the boogeyman.

The UK supports Ukraine during this conflict with last year's ban only reluctantly lifted. It happened due to threats of huge fines from the ATP and WTA. It's the same reason why Russian player Pavlyuchenkova laughed off a question about a Wimbledon wild card. She knew it wouldn't happen and it didn't.
