Carlos Alcaraz became the 2023 Wimbledon champion, and he was honest as always after the match.
With a handful of players dominating a sport for many years, the talk of generations becomes normal very fast. It's already normal in most sports as we see generations come and go while the sport remains the same. Alcaraz is part of the next generation of players on the ATP Tour, but he doesn't play for them, nor does he seek to represent them.
He plays largely for himself and to leave a legacy as Carlos Alcaraz. He was asked about the generational change in tennis after his triumph, and he confirmed that it's not something that he thinks about. He just plays for himself, hoping to win as much as he can to create some tennis history. He did just that at this year's Wimbledon.
Well, I did it for myself, not for tennis generation, honestly. It was great. Beating Novak at his best, in this stage, making history, being the guy to beat him after 10 years unbeaten on that court, is amazing for me. It's something that I will never forget, that's for sure.
While that is pretty standard for any player, Alcaraz did recognize that his victories are certainly great for young players coming up because it shows that it's possible. Inspiring others is something all athletes like to do, so in that sense, he's glad to show others that it's possible to do.
As I said, it's great for the new generation, as well, I think to see me beating him and making them think that they are capable to do it, as well. It's great for me and I think for the young players, as well.
It took a really strong effort from the Spaniard to get it done, something many of his contemporaries weren't able to do even as great talents. It shows that he's quite special in that regard.
