A terrible season for Denis Shapovalov continues to get worse as the Canadian withdrew from the 2023 Cincinnati Masters.
Denis Shapovalov wasn't known as an injury-prone player earlier in his career but rather a player that hasn't lived up to his potential. Unfortunately for the Canadian, things flipped as injuries keep derailing his season and preventing him from playing consistent tennis.
Playing is the best way to get better and that's something Shapovalov hasn't been doing all that much this year. When he did play, he was actually quite decent considering how he couldn't get many consecutive weeks of actually playing tennis.
This part of the season was supposed to give him a chance to finally figure things out but it's not happening. The injury that bothered and played a part in his Wimbledon result is still affecting him. Due to that, he's had to pull out from yet another ATP 1000 event.
He missed the Gstaad event, then the Citi Open and then the Canadian Open which particularly hurt him. Now he's going to miss the Cincinnati Masters as well because of the same injury. It's just an unfortunate sequence of events for Shapovalov with no clear ending in sight.
He has not provided many updates regarding his issues but it's believed that he should be good to go for the US Open. Missing out on that event would be a major blow for the Canadian who has been getting only bad news in regard to his tennis career.
Off the courts, things seem to be going really well though so that's good at least. With all the bad news recently it's good that he has something that improves the mood so he stays motivated enough to pursue tennis among all this heartbreak. Hopefully things will our better for him in the coming weeks.
