Casper Ruud was at the ATP Finals in Turin last year and the year before, but it's unlikely we'll see him there this year due to another surprisingly quick loss.
Casper Ruud has been one of the more consistent players in recent years, but this year hasn't been anything special. He started it badly after that awful experiment in the offseason, which was no offseason at all.
It was a mistake, and he admitted as much, promising not to repeat it; however. He did reach the Roland Garros final, which was his best result this year, but outside of that, it hasn't been that good.
The win total reflects that as we're weeks away from the end of the season, and he's sitting at 36 wins while he had 53 wins last year.
He had 57 wins the previous year, and he'll finish nowhere close to that this year, which shows the difference. Despite that, Ruud was one of the players who had a chance to find himself in Turin; however, he really needed a strong finish to the year.
That seems impossible after an early crashout at the Japan Open, where Marcos Giron beat him. He needs finals and semi-finals, and he's not playing anywhere near that level. With the loss, Ruud will remain at 2815 points so far this year, which is an entire 300 points behind Holger Rune, who is number 8 right now.
The Dane is playing this week in Stockholm and is still in the draw, which means that he'll likely extend his lead over Rune. The crucial event will be the Paris Masters where the most amount of points will be up for grabs.
Still, losing this early in an ATP 500 event is less than ideal for Ruud, but that's been this entire year. Sometimes, it's just not your year.
