Retired tennis legend Andre Agassi is in line to become team captain at the Laver Cup, according to a reputable source.
Agassi is one of the sport's most decorated champions. He won eight Grand Slams in singles and is one of eight men to win a career Grand Slam (the unique achievement of winning at each of the four majors). He also won a gold medal in singles at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Since retiring from the sport, Agassi has barely been involved in the tennis tour, although he briefly coached current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in 2017 and has featured in a few charitable causes in tennis exhibitions. He has been an active philanthropist through his foundation and runs some business ventures.
Recently, he was invited to this year's Australian Open, where he had the honor of unveiling the men's and women's trophies in the company of Ashleigh Barty just before Novak Djokovic's first-round match against Dino Prizmic.
This month, Agassi took part in the second edition of the Pickleball Slam with his wife, Steffi Graf, and defeated the team of John McEnroe and Maria Sharapova to bag the $1 million paycheck.
But the American great will now have to commit to the Laver Cup dugout as a team captain. That's the word of reliable tennis journalist Craig Shapiro, who tweeted on X that sources have informed him that Agassi's new role is just waiting on an announcement.
"Sources telling me Agassi is going to be named new Laver Cup captain."
Shapiro did not specify when that will happen and which team he will be captaining. But because of his nationality, it would appear he will be the new coach of Team World, which has been captained by another American legend, John McEnroe, since the Laver Cup was incepted back in 2017.
McEnroe and Bjorn Borg (who captains Team Europe) have been confirmed as the captains for the 2024 edition, which returns to Europe and will be held in Berlin, Germany. So, that means Agassi's involvement will probably happen next year.
