Only Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic can now be the World No. 1 on the ATP Tour after the 2023 Wimbledon.
Entering the third Grand Slam of the season, there were three players that could reach the top spot in the ATP Rankings. Those names were Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev, who is now not on the list anymore.
But the Russian didn't do anything wrong. In fact, he reached his maiden quarterfinal at Wimbledon and things are going really well for him. Yet, since the two biggest favourites also made it to the quarterfinals, his gap to the top spot is now too big and he's out of the fight.
Currently, Medvedev would have 6160 points next to his name if he lost in the quarterfinals, and 7800 points if he would win the tournament. On the other hand, Alcaraz is sure to have at least 8035 points while Djokovic will have a minimum of 7955 points after the event.
That means, that the list of names now got a little bit shorter, and the possible battle between the young Spaniard and the experienced Serbian got even more interesting. They are two players that are projected to meet in the final, and it can be a battle for more than the title.
Since the difference between the two in the rankings is so small, if they finish in the same round, Alcaraz will stay ahead of Djokovic after the event. If that doesn't happen, then anyone who makes it that one step further will have number 1 next to their name on Monday.
In their quarterfinal matches, both will face a difficult test. While Alcaraz will take on fellow youngest Holger Rune on Tuesday, the 23-time Grand Slam champion will play against an in-form Andrey Rublev on Monday.
