The 2024 Shanghai Masters is the penultimate ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season and the draw for the event has been revealed.
Running from October 2nd to 13th, the Shanghai Masters is the last tournament of the very popular Asian Swing. After competing in this ATP Masters 1000 tournament, the players will move to Europe, where the last part of the season will take place.
The tournament is held at the beautiful Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, and last year, it was held for the first time since 2019, as the tournament wasn't part of the ATP calendar for three years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After Nikolay Davydenko won the inaugural tournament in 2009, three men dominated the event, as Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Roger Federer won all of the editions between 2010 and 2018.
However, Daniil Medvedev was the 2019 champion and Hubert Hurkacz won the tournament this year. Unfortunately, the Polish player won't get to defend his title as he was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of an injury.
Djokovic, who is a four-time champion, will certainly want to add his fifth title, as he will play his first tournament since his disappointing loss to Alexei Popyrin at the 2024 US Open.
Like all 32 seeded players in the 96-player draw, he has first-round bye. The Serbian legend is the fourth seed, and in the second round, he will start against the winner of the match between Bu Yunchaokete and Alex Michelsen.
Although Djokovic is a 24-time Grand Slam champion, many eyes will be on two youngsters in the draw. Jannik Sinner is the reigning World No. 1 player, and, naturally, also the top seed at the 2024 Shanghai Masters.
In the second round of the tournament, the young Italian will start against a qualifier or Taro Daniel, which is a playable draw for him. However, his main rival, Carlos Alcaraz, who is the third seed and in the same half of the draw, has much more challenging draw than the Italian.
Already in the second round, he can play home player and prodigy Juncheng Shang, who recently won his first ATP title in Chengdu. To play against Alcaraz, Shang will need to beat Coleman Wong in the first round of the tournament.
The second seed at the 2024 Shanghai Masters is Alexander Zverev, who withdrew from the China Open after he struggled physically at the Laver Cup. In the second round of the tournament, he will play against one of the qualifiers.
As a former champion, Daniil Medvedev will be also one of the players to look out for. The Russian is the fifth seed, in the same half as Alcaraz and Sinner, and in the second round, he will play against either a qualifier or Thiago Seyboth Wild.
The draw for the 2024 Shanghai Masters includes many great matchups, and the full draw can be viewed below.
