Iga Swiatek's 21-match winning streak is over as the Polish player was stunned by Yulia Putintseva at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
Swiatek has looked great at Wimbledon despite not playing a single preparation event on grass prior to the major at SW19. This was new for her because, generally, she made an effort to play one at least, but this time around, she simply went to London earlier than usual to prepare.
It was proving to be a good choice, but her qualities certainly contributed to that. Grass is not her best surface because it doesn't have the high bounce of clay, which she likes, but she's also won 21 matches in a row, so clearly, she was above the rest.
This match had all the makings of a complicated one, but after the first set, it didn't look like it would be that way. That set was a bit surprising in the way it went, but surely not as surprising as the rest of the match ended up being.
The Pole won the opening set 6-3, as she was the far more aggressive player. She was going for it, and it worked out well because she totaled 19 winners in 9 games of play, which is a really great mark.
She made more errors than her opponent as well, but thanks to hitting almost three times as many winners, it didn't matter that much. Another positive for her was a good serving day, as she totaled three aces in the opening set.
The second set, though, was completely different. Swiatek didn't serve well, and she didn't play well, hitting the ball wide or far too many times. Putintseva was also much better, basically perfect, and that's why she won it 6-1.
The final set wasn't that much different, as Swiatek once again sailed the ball wide or far too many times. The World No. 1 just couldn't counter her opponent, as Putintseva recorded the best win of her career, beating Swiatek 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
