'Who Were Those People': McEnroe Hits Out At Gauff Haters After US Open Triumph

| by Evita Mueller

Coco Gauff won the 2023 US Open, proving her talent, which caused John McEnroe to question those who didn't believe in her.

Gauff was obviously highly regarded ever since she stepped on a tennis court due to the talent she possesses. Her career was a huge success, which is what most predicted a few years ago, but apparently, there were those who thought she wouldn't amount to anything, even years into her career on the WTA Tour.

After finally dispelling all of that at the US Open, John McEnroe questioned her detractors. While speaking to Eurosport, the former legendary player wondered out loud how anybody could possibly think that Gauff didn't have what it takes to be a Grand Slam champion.

I heard Coco talking about the people who were writing her off and saying that she was never going to win a major. Who were those people? I'm not familiar with those people because I think her progress has been steady. It has been really positive, and she was in the final of the French.

McEnroe isn't someone who shies away from critiquing players as he famously questioned whether Emma Raducanu has what it takes. He was proven wrong at the US Open not long after that and owned it but he never questioned Gauff.

Okay, so there were a couple of stumbling blocks along the way, but I don't think anyone didn't think she was going to win a bunch of majors. So, well done, Coco Gauff because, at the end of the day, Sabalenka came out on fire and was hitting the ball absolutely huge.

Gauff herself had some words to say to her detractors, which was very satisfying for her. She explained how seeing people question her brings the best out of her because she's, according to her own words, very stubborn and loves proving people wrong.
