"What a surprise" - Giorgi after winning first title since 2021

Camila Giorgi celebrated a triumph on the WTA Tour for the first time since 2021 and she was really happy about it.

Back in 2021, the Italian won the biggest title in her career when she triumphed in Montreal, but she experienced a drop in the WTA Rankings after she couldn't defend her points in 2022 and she had to fight her way up once again.

Recently, Giorgi also dealt with a COVID-19 vaccine scandal, but that didn't stop her from an impressive showing at the 2023 Merida Open in Mexico, which she visited for the first time according to her own words.

The Italian, who wasn't seeded in Merida, started against no. 6 seed Mayar Sherif. She comfortably beat the Egyptian and won in two sets also against Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the second round.

In the quarterfinals, Giorgi took care of the biggest surprise of the tournament when she double bagled the second-seeded Sloane Stephens, winning 6-0, 6-0.

In the semifinals, the Italian defeated yet another seeded player, no. 4 Katerina Siniakova and she entered the final match without losing a set.

But Rebecca Peterson, who was a qualifier at the 2023 Merida Open, showed her qualities and took on set away from her final opponent. Eventually, Giorgi won in two hours and 25 minutes 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-2 and she was visibly happy after her triumph.

“I’m so happy to be here, especially my first time in Mexico. What a surprise. This atmosphere—was an amazing week. What a final we did Rebecca.”
