Iga Swiatek has an active 19-match winning streak, but the Polsih player has no expectations for the grass season.
It's well known that the Polish player doesn't have a good relationship with grass, which is her weakest surface. She's done better with each year, but it's still not a surface she would consider herself comfortable on.
Last year's Wimbledon run ended at the hands of Elina Svitolina, but it was a solid one, as she reached her maiden quarter-finals at SW19. The goal for this year will be to improve as a player on grass and possibly go further, but she doesn't really have high expectations or any expectations.
She spoke about her comfortability on grass after her Roland Garros triumph, admitting that there were ideas on how to improve as a player on that surface.
"I had these ideas of doing pre-season on grass so I can learn how to play there. Last year’s result was pretty nice. I feel like every year it’s easier for me to adapt to grass. So I think there is no need to do that."
Swiatek's goal is to grow comfortable on the surface, and the only way to do that is by playing on it. She'll work hard to prepare herself as best as possible ahead of Wimbledon, and hopefully, it will work out as intended.
"I just need to continue the work that I’ve been doing, and, yeah, it’s been easier every year, especially with my coach who, with Radwanska, they had great results on grass and he kind of feels grass well, I think. But yeah, for sure it’s a huge challenge."
The world no. 1 also admitted that had she lost earlier in the French capital, she would have likely started her preparations earlier, but she didn't, so for now, she will focus on her upcoming tournament, which is the Berlin Open.
"If I would lose here earlier, maybe I would be able to play two more weeks on grass and then be a better grass player, but if I would choose, I love playing on clay, so I’m not going to give up that ever."
