Swiatek Dismisses Claims About Poland Open Not Being Important To Her

| by Balasz Virag

Iga Swiatek caught some criticism for apparently dodging to play for Poland a few times, however, the country is very important to her.

Swiatek proclaimed her patriotism more than once, admitting that winning a medal at the Olympic Games is her biggest dream. While she's generally been good with keeping up with her goals, the Polish player is yet to deliver something great in tennis while wearing Polish colours.

She hasn't represented the country in the Billie Jean King Cup often apologizing several times about it. She's blamed the schedule on her decision to pull out last year, something the legendary Billie Jean King herself criticized.

Such moves prompted some to suggest that she was dodging playing for her country, which is probably a stretch, but there are grounds to stand on when it comes to that point. Next year's Olympics will be a huge one for the Polish superstar as it will be held on the very courts where she's been dominant both this and last year.

That will be her best chance to deliver something great for her country, but for now, she's confirmed her dedication to Poland with a post-Poland Open comment on social media. She even referenced those claims that she didn't care about the event because it was a WTA 250 tournament, admitting that it was a very important event for her.

Ultimately she got the trophy, her first on native soil, but fans will hope that it's not the last one. That's probably one thing Iga can agree on.

What a week it was.I read somewhere that the 250 WTA tournament is not as important as my next challenges in Canada and in the US. Well...to me it was VERY important and I'm happy I felt so much support and positive energy from you, fans. Thank you for that and see you soon.
