After losing in the 2022 Ostrava Open final to Barbora Krejcikova, Iga Swiatek immediately travelled to the United States for the 2022 San Diego Open.
In her first round at the tournament, the young Pole took on Qinwen Zheng from China. Prior to the competition, Iga Swiatek talked about coming from one WTA 500 event to another across the globe, when she said: "It's not that bad. It's the 'nice' jet lag, coming this way."
Despite being in the United States only for a few hours, world no. 1 started the first set in a dominant style. Although Swiatek failed to use her first break point, she created another chance in the ninth game of the first set and won it 6-4 after 49 minutes.
Yet, despite seven chances to break her opponent in the second set, Swiatek couldn't get the decisive lead and eventually, Zheng levelled score of the match after winning the second set 6-4.
But there wasn't much drama in the third set as Swiatek sprinted towards a victory by winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 20 minutes. In the quarterfinals, she will play against Bianca Andreescu or Coco Gauff.
