Serena Williams admits she and her sister, Venus Williams, do not talk much about tennis after speaking about the topic for many years.
Some may have expected the legendary duo to discuss the sport regularly after both made comebacks from nearly 12 months on the sidelines with physical issues.
Serena returned by playing doubles at the Eastbourne International with Ons Jabeur before playing her first singles match in a year at Wimbledon, losing to Harmony Tan in the first round.
Venus made her comeback to professional tennis by competing in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon with Jamie Murray. Her singles return followed a few weeks later at the Citi Open in Washington.
However, the pair's return to the professional circuit has not led to many conversations about tennis, as Serena confirmed after her win against Nuria Parrizas-Diaz at the Canadian Open.
The younger sister says talking about the sport since they were children means they naturally gravitate towards other topics, but she is still happy when her sibling is around at tournaments.
"Honestly, we don't talk a lot about tennis. I think after a hundred years of talking tennis together we just, that's like a subject we don't talk about anymore really. But, yeah, it's good to just be around. And when she's around, it's just, it's cool. I mean, she's Venus Williams."
Serena was satisfied after the opening round in Toronto. The 40-year-old acknowledged that she is not where she wants to be but that every match brings her closer to her best.
"I feel good. I felt like I competed well today. Mentally, I feel I'm getting there. I'm not where I normally am and I'm not where I want to be. But I think any match that I play, whether I win or lose, it helps me get there mentally."
