Sakkari Reportedly Parts Ways With Pegula's Former Coach Only After Few Months

| by Zachary Wimer

Maria Sakkari has been dealing with an up-and-down form, and in the midst of that, she parted ways with her coach, David Witt.

Witt, of course, is best known for having worked with Jessica Pegula in recent years, but they split earlier this year. It was a shocking move to many because they worked really well together, and the American became one of the most consistent tennis players on the WTA Tour.

After parting ways with Pegula, Witt didn't spend much time as a free agent because Sakkari signed him up. The Greek player has had an odd year so far, with good play at times but also pretty bizarre losses at other times.

Sakkari's career has been like that most of the time because, at times, she plays incredible tennis only to lose to a low-ranked player a few days later. Her Roland Garros experience was terrible, as Varvara Gracheva beat her in the first round.

The start of the grass-court season wasn't that much better because Victoria Azarenka beat the Greek in two simple sets at the 2024 Berlin Open, and Witt seemingly paid the price because reportedly, the two split.

According to reports from Greece's SDNA, Sakkari will not work with Witt in the future after weeks of underwhelming play. They teamed up at the beginning of March, and initially, their collaboration looked fruitful.

Sakkari played well in Indian Wells, making the final, where she was beaten by Iga Swiatek. She then made the quarter-final at the Miami Open and generally looked to be playing at a great level.

Since then, however, Sakkari has faded as her level got progressively worse over the span of a few weeks, with these final two losses being the absolute worst performances of her season. Changes in her team might be coming, but this move is the only official one so far.
