'Not A Definitive Goodybe': Muguruza Hints Tennis Comeback In 2024

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Garbine Muguruza is away from tennis after announcing a break from the sport earlier this year and she likely won't be coming back to the WTA Tour this year.

The Spaniard has been struggling with her tennis for a very long time being unable to find her best tennis. She struggled for much of 2022 with this year continuing the struggles prompting to her to simply walk away from the sport.

It was not a retirement but rather a break with no date of return known. She announced her engagement in the meantime, admitting that life has been very good to her even if she's not playing tennis. Being able to step away from the sport was quite nice for her because most of her life has been dedicated to the sport.

Recently, the 29-year-old was back in Spain at the Chamartín Tennis Club where she received the Gold Medal for Sports Merit. During her speech, Muguruza expressed gratitude for the recognition while hinting at a potential return date.

(I am) Very excited by this recognition. It makes me feel very proud to play, to achieve so many successes. I wanted to thank the president of the CSD for coming and giving me this award and the President of the Federation Miguel Díaz. I thank my mother and my partner, who have been able to come today.

Muguruza didn't really specify a date of return when asked about it but she named some goals such as the US Open, Australian Open, and the Olympic Games. When you combine that with comments of how she's enjoying her time away then it's pretty clear that Muguruza won't be coming back this year.

I’m enjoying this sabbatical, I think it’s good to stop but it’s not a definitive goodbye. I want to prepare myself to come back, when I’m ready I’ll go back to the courts. US Open, Australian Open, Olympic medal.
