'No Excuses': Gauff Looking To Forget Disappointing Grass Loss

| by Alfredo Bassanelli

Coco Gauff returned to winning ways following her disappointing Berlin loss and she's hoping to continue at the 2023 Eastbourne International.

Gauff has played in Eastbourne in the past and after an early exit in Berlin, she opted to play at the event in order to get in some more matches ahead of Wimbledon. The most recent weeks have been somewhat shaky for Gauff and outside that minor Roland Garros run, the American failed to win back-to-back matches multiple times.

It happened again in Berlin as she took out Siniakova in the opening round only to lose to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round. It wasn't a good match from Gauff as the Russian won 6-4 6-0, and she was aware of it.

Yeah, I mean, that defeat, I mean, I learned from it. Like the scoreline was not good, but I didn't, you know, have a lot of expectations for the grass, first grass tournament, especially.

As she explained, the first event on grass rarely goes well for most players. Unless you're Novak Djokovic is some other exception to the rule, you're going to struggle a bit on grass initially. She didn't really practice all that much before that event which likely contributed to the loss against a player who came to Berlin after winning a trophy on grass the previous week.

I took five days off after French Open, and I practiced twice maybe or three times on grass before my match. it was going to be tough, especially playing against her who won the title the previous week.

Yeah, but no excuses. I mean, she played great. But I think that's the mentality I think I have to have going into the rest of the grass season, not letting one win dictate how the rest of the season will go.
