Naomi Osaka crashes out of 2022 Roland Garros against Amanda Anisimova

Amanda Anisimova defeated Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-4 in 1 hour and 30 minutes in a high-profile first-round match at Roland Garros 2022, knocking the former world no. 1 out of a second Grand Slam tournament this year.

The young American knocked out former world number one already of one Grand Slam this season and after finding out about the draw, Naomi Osaka said: “I wouldn’t say like I don’t want to play her, because I feel like for me I’m the type of person that if you beat me, like it motivates me more to win and I also learned a lot from the match." However, the match in Paris looked similar to one in Melbourne as it was Amanda Anisimova who dominated.

In their Parisian reprise, the American did not need to go the distance; though it was a close race throughout, Anisimova managed to stay in front for the most part. Osaka never quite got the right pace for it, and her performance in the important rallies was insufficient. She simply didn't appear as enthusiastic about winning the match as Anisimova did. In the first set, she also committed 17 unforced errors.

The result maintains Anisimova's excellent form over the previous two months. She has yet to lose in a clay-court competition before the last eight, reaching the semifinals in Charleston and the quarterfinals in Madrid and Rome. Osaka, on the other hand, finishes her clay-court season with a 1-2 record after withdrawing from Rome due to an ankle issue.
