Madison Keys will take on Jessica Pegula in what promises to be a really charged matchup at the 2023 US Open.
It doesn't get much better than two Americans playing at the US Open because the atmosphere is always so electric. A match featuring Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula promises to deliver everything that a matchup like that entails.
A spot in the quarter-final of the home Grand Slam is at stake, so best believe that both players will show up in a major way. Pegula is the favourite to win, but that means very little when we have two players who are as streaky as this.
They played only once so far on the WTA Tour, which is kind of surprising considering how long they've been around. It happened last year in San Diego, with Pegula winning in two sets. This match will also be on native soil, but the surfaces play quite a bit differently between New York and San Diego.
It's quite clear that Jessica Pegula is closer to winning this match for several reasons. For one, she's arguably the better player right now; a few years ago, Keys would have likely won that comparison, but right now, it's undoubtedly Pegula.
She's also playing better recently, which the Montreal title run demonstrates. Another thing is the consistency of Pegula. She's by far one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour, rarely producing a dud, but also doesn't really hit a crazy peak, which Keys is capable of.
Keys is incredible when she's playing her best tennis, quite literally impossible to beat. Yet that only happens occasionally and hasn't happened at this year's US Open. Far too many times, we've seen rollercoaster Keys, which won't work against Pegula. She needs an incredibly consistent effort to win, and I don't see it happening.
Prediction: Jessica Pegula in three sets.
