Petra Kvitova just won her 31st career trophy in Berlin yet the former number two is heading into Wimbledon with no expectations.
Kvitova is now one of the more veteran players on the tour at 33 years old with her best days long gone. Despite that, the sheer quality of her tennis remains high at times allowing her to put together some stellar performances even if they are quite rare compared to before.
Earlier this year Kvitova put together an impressive run to win the 2023 Miami Open, something that she didn't think was possible. She added another trophy to her tally in Berlin by beating everyone including Donna Vekic in the final. Despite the strong showing on grass, Kvitova doesn't see herself as a favourite at Wimbledon.
No. It's always different playing a Grand Slam and playing the other tournaments. There's a lot of pressure over there. I'm going to try to enjoy it. If I play good tennis, who knows what can happen. I'm really happy with this week, that's important for me. We will see what happens.
Really happy about her trophy Kvitova also reflected on her career. It's been a long one with both great and upsetting moments and it certainly won't last another ten years. The Czech player joked that she's going to be a mother with kids in the future reflecting how planning out your career as a woman is hard.
In 10 years for sure I will not be playing any more. One day I would love to be a mum and have kids. It's always a tough decision with the timing. I think for female athletes it's not really easy to choose what you want to have in life.
I'm not thinking about it right now. Whatever happens, happens. We'll see what life brings.
