Daria Kasatkina has opened up about the importance of her decision to share her sexuality as a homosexual.
In 2022, the Russian player decided to openly share that she was homosexual and the revelation was met with opposition from politicians in her home nation. However, Kasatkina has previously stated how her decision to come out was personally one of her best-ever decisions.
During Wimbledon, where Kasatkina reached the third round after defeating Brit Jodie Burrage on Centrre Court in round two, the 26-year-old spoke to the BBC about her choice to share her sexuality. In an honest interview, the Russian player explained that the choice has not come without difficulty, but, on the whole, she feels better about making the decision.
"It's hard, but at the same time, I feel much better to be open. I had to choose, I am in the closet and I am not saying anything, but I don't feel good inside or I come out with this and, ok I have to face a few problems, but to be myself and I made the right choice for myself and I don't regret it at all. "
"Unfortunately, I come from a country where everything is very strict. It is what it is and I have to accept this and I'm happy to be myself and if this means I have to face this problem, it's my choice. For me, it's most important how I feel inside myself."
Also, Kasatkina was asked about how her revalation was perceived by her fellow WTA players. The 26-year-old stated that most competitors have been very supportive, yet others have not been so welcoming.
"I stayed in a good relationship with a few of the players, of course. Some of them had a different reaction, but in general, I'm happy to keep a good relationship with them because for me number one is not who you are as a player, but who you are as a human."
"I think now it's very important to be human and to love each other and try to support each other."
