'Jet Lag, Money & Travelling': Swiatek Names Worst & Best Things in Life Of Tennis Player

| by Kadir Macar

Iga Swiatek opened up about the best and worst aspects of a tennis pro's life in her recent press conference.

The young Pole is currently competing at the 2023 Madrid Open and after her third-round win over Bernarda Pera from the United States, Swiatek didn't talk only about her performance and how she was able to overcome a tricky left-handed opponent.

But first, Swiatek was naturally asked about the match, which ended in a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 victory for her, as well as how she prepares for players that play with left hand, such as Pera who she beat at the WTA 1000 event in the Spanish capital.

"Well, I think it was a solid performance, and I'm happy that I was really focused on this event and I was able to kind of keep my level throughout the whole match. I'm happy that I played well. We are trying to play a practice day before and maybe warm up with a left-handed sparring partner, but it's not always possible."

As she was asked about it Swiatek also shared her thoughts on the highs and lows of her career as a tennis player, candidly discussing the challenges of jet lag, along with the perks of making money and traveling the globe.

"You just want one thing? Well, the worst I would say jet lag. And the best, like, money and traveling (smiling). Well, that's kind of obvious. No? (Laughter.)"

Jet lag has long been a bane for international athletes, and Swiatek is no exception. The young tennis star described the difficulty in adjusting to timezone changes, particularly when traveling from west to east.

"Hmm. Well, it depends, because sometimes when we are traveling like from Australia through Middle East and then States, it's all fine, but then when we are coming back to Europe and if we are gonna go from States to China it's going to be tricky."

To alleviate the effects of jet lag, Swiatek mentioned her team's efforts to find effective solutions. One of these strategies involves using special lamps with adjustable brightness levels.

"So going from west to east, yeah, from west to east, well, for sure, I need just some help in like Melatonin and stuff. But also Daria is kind of working on having these different like lamps that are kind of in a good brightness."
