Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, is returning from injury in the 2022 season as she competes in her third clay-court competition.
The young Canadian had previously competed in Stuttgart, where she was defeated in the second round by Aryna Sabalenka. In the third round in Madrid, she was defeated by Jessica Pegula, a later finalist. She will also participate in the third round of the 2022 Italian Open in Rome, after she overcame Nuria Parrizas-Diaz.
Bianca Andreescu is doing good so far in the 2022 season. She had already defeated Emma Raducanu in Rome when the young British player resigned, and she had now finished another match without dropping a set. Her strong second-round effort earned her a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory in 1 hour and 38 minutes.
The world number 90 will face Petra Martic in the following round, who beat fifth-seeded Anett Kontaveit in the second round. If the young Canadian wins, she could face a tough challenge in the quarterfinals, as she could play world number one Iga Swiatek.
"It was great. I think this is a great match for me to build and learn from. I'm very pumped. It was pretty emotional," Andreescu said after the match. "She plays really well. She changes up the rhythm. She hits very hard and deep. She stands really far back."
"In the second set it was just who wins the most important points kind of thing. I was really focusing on my serve, to get those in as much as I can because I know it's up and down. It was just a dog fight."
