Iga Swiatek has finally done it, the Polish superstar finally won a trophy on native soil, winning the 2023 Poland Open.
Winning a WTA trophy on native soil has always been a dream for Swiatek because she's just that proud of being Polish. It's always something she talks about, and by admitting to feeling quite a bit of stress earlier in the week, Swiatek proved how much this means to her.
The last few days were quite complicated because she saw her matches delayed a couple of times due to bad weather. She played two matches, both on Saturday and today, because of that, but nothing could stop her from achieving her goal.
The opponent in the final was an experienced veteran Laura Siegemund, but the German was no match. The bagel factory was open for business as the first set finished 6-0 in just 31 minutes of play. Swiatek lost just two points behind her serve and lost only 8 of 22 points on the return to get it done.
She was simply smashing her opponent from the baseline, as there are very few players who could resist her from the baseline. The second set didn't bring any meaningful change, even though Siegemund was trying her best to resist Swiatek.
The Polish player still jumped out to an early 3-0 lead was the beginning of the end of the match. The Polish player added another break later on to properly close out the match, and she did. The final score was 6-0, 6-1 in a little over an hour which was quite impressive.
Swiatek's first trophy on native soil but she'll hope that it won't be the only one. 15th overall, so that's a nice milestone to celebrate back home in Warsaw. Up next is the North American stretch. She's the US Open defending champion.
