Iga Swiatek vs Danielle Collins: 2023 Canadian Open Montreal - Preview & Prediction

| by Nurein Ahmed

Top seed Iga Swiatek will face unseeded American Danielle Collins in the quarterfinal of the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal on Friday, August 11, 2023.

Iga Swiatek overcame a double rain delay to progress into the quarterfinal in Montreal for the first time. She defeated Karolina Muchova in their rematch of the French Open final 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Swiatek knew the bare minimum she had to do to keep her No. 1 ranking next week was to reach the last eight stage, and which she has.

Her next opponent will be American Danielle Collins who has surprisingly caught fire at the start of the summer hard courts. Collins arrived in Canada at the weekend very cold, scoring a measly two main draw wins since the start of the Indian Wells tournament.

But she has rediscovered her mojo, winning a pair of qualifying matches in three sets. Since then, she hasn't dropped a set in the main draw, beating the likes of Elina Svitolina, Maria Sakkari, and home hope Leylah Fernandez to reach her first quarterfinal in five months.

Head-to-head:

Iga Swiatek and Danielle Collins have played three times in the head-to-head. Swiatek leads 2-1, winning matches in Adelaide in 2021 and more recently in the round of 16 in Doha in the first half of the season. Collins' sole victory over the Pole came during her mesmeric run to the Australian Open final in 2022.

Prediction:

Collins credits her renaissance to her new coach Jared Jacobs who digs into tactics and statistics before matches. In recent years, Collins has been a perennial danger on hard courts and Swiatek will be well aware of her capabilities.

Her recent slump was slightly amplified. It coincided with the start of the European clay where historically she's never played her best tennis. On hard courts, her searing pace could worry Swiatek, and she is coming off her first Top 10 win of the season.

Still, with all things considered, Swiatek should manage to wear down Collins with her wonderful court coverage. Even though the Pole is not in championship-winning form this week, she should be a solid favorite to edge this one.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek in straight sets.
