For the A+E Networks and the History Channel's History Talks in Washington, D.C., actor-turned-director Bradley Cooper spoke with tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams.
It seems that only a few weeks from "evolving away from tennis", Serena Williams started to miss the courts. During many interviews, the 23-time Grand Slam champion hinted that she may once come back and she did it again.
When asked if it was her last match in the Flushing Meadows, she answered: "(I) don't know (if it was my last match)," said Serena Williams, hinting that she may return at the 2023 Australian Open: "I'm not thinking about that. I always did love Australia, though (smiling). But yeah, you know what, I've come a long way since last year at Wimbledon."
Then she also spoke to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show and when asked if there's a chance of her "pulling a Tom Brady" (American football player who came back from retirement only 40 days after announcing it), the 23-time Grand Slam champion answered: "Tom Brady started an amazing trend. That’s what I want to say,” said Williams.
Now, when speaking to Bradley Cooper with her sister Venus, she dropped yet another hint that it may not be over for her in terms of a professional tennis career.
“I just needed to stop,” Serena Williams recalled. “I always said I wanted to stop when I’m playing really good tennis and winning and beating good players. For me, it’s really about things I want to do spiritually and spending time with my daughter and family.”
“As a super hands-on mom, I can’t tell you how hard it was. I lost so many matches after I had Olympia because it was so hard to be on the court. I feel like I’ve given so much of my life to tennis, my entire life, that it’s time to do something different for me and also work on other things.”
“I feel like if I want to come back, I definitely can still come back,” Serena Williams concluded.
