Coco Gauff continued her run at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships with another solid performance, beating native player Sonay Kartal in two sets.
Gauff was the heavy favorite in this match largely because she's one of the best players in the world. Kartal is a fairly decent player from Great Britain, which makes her very familiar with grass, and she showed that in this match.
Still, there was a clear gap in level, which was visible fairly early in the match. The American has looked really solid on the grass this year, especially in London, where she scored some really impressive wins this week.
This match opened well for her because she got an early break, which is exactly how she likes to begin her matches. The 2023 US Open winner can sometimes be positively nervous and too excited, which creates some problems for her.
When she breaks easily, she calms down and plays her game. The match was calm after that, but one poor game from Gauff got Kartal the break back, and it was a reminder that the American can't really relax too much.
She broke again immediately after and won the opening set of the match 6-4. Gauff approached the second set much more focused because she didn't make the same mistake she did in the opening set.
An early break made it 2-0, then another break made it 4-0, and from there, it was a rather simple cruise to the finish line for the American player. Gauff was the more aggressive player, which isn't a surprise because Kartal generally plays defensive tennis.
The Brit's problem was that her shots weren't really hitting. She had a few winners but mostly unforced errors, and that was not good enough to defeat Gauff. The final score was 6-4, 6-0 for the American, who moved onto the second week of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships without losing a single set.
