Coco Gauff won her 25th match of the year against Bernarda Pera to start her Eastbourne International campaign.
Gauff has had a really solid season so far with now 25 wins to her name. The American certainly could have won even more matches as plenty of results were quite disappointing but for the most part, she's been pretty solid. There aren't a lot of players that won more matches on the WTA Tour than Gauff this year.
Her grass season started in Berlin and she won her opening match with a great performance. The second match didn't go so well but it allowed her to shift her focus to her next event - Eastbourne International. Gauff has played at the event before and liked her experience so she decided to return.
Getting in a few more matches on grass will be beneficial for Gauff who at times looked a bit unsure what to do on a tennis court. Grass is a fair surface for her but she needs to build up that confidence as she clearly isn't on the level she was last year. The event in Eastbourne will also allow her to take a look at her new coach whom she hired for the grass swing on a trial basis.
The start in the coastal town was rather good. A simple win over compatriot Pera who can be a tricky player to beat. Pera is capable of serving well and has a tricky lefty that can give you a lot of problems but Gauff handled it well. She dominated in rallies and didn't face a single break point in the entire match which is huge for her.
The serve was excellent as she hit 5 aces winning the majority of points behind it. On return, she utilized her speed to get the ball back forcing Pera into mistakes. A good plan executed well ended in a 6-3 6-2 win for Gauff who faces Jodie Burrage next.
