'First Week Only': Swiatek Hilariously Downplays Her Wimbledon Chances

| by Kadir Macar

Iga Swiatek is the world no. 1 and the biggest favourite at almost every event that she enters, but she's still very humble.

The young Pole recently engaged in a delightful conversation with American skier Mikaela Shiffrin. The two 2023 Laureus World Sports Award nominees bonded over their mutual love for sports and the challenges of their demanding schedules.

During their Instagram live chat on Laureus Sports, Swiatek and Shiffrin discussed the possibility of finally seeing each other compete, with the Pole extending a warm invitation to Shiffrin to attend one of her matches.

The seven-time world champion skier eagerly expressed her desire to visit Wimbledon, to which Swiatek humorously downplayed her own chances at the prestigious grass court tournament. When speaking about the invitation for an event, Swiatek said:

“We keep inviting each other and somehow, it’s gonna happen.”

Shiffrin responded with a desire to come to the match, saying: “I think I just need to come to one of your matches. Cause’ I am dying to come anyway.”

Swiatek is ready to host probably the most-talented skier in history, when she said that she will treat her like a family: “If you’re gonna come at one of my tournaments, we are going to host you like a family, so come and you’ll see.”

But Shiffrin's dream is to go to Wimbledon as she admitted: “I really, really would love to go to Wimbledon. So, that’s my dream.”

Swiatek, a three-time Grand Slam champion and two-time Roland Garros winner, has yet to truly shine at Wimbledon. Her best performance in the professional circuit came in 2021 when she reached the fourth round and so she joked that it's more secure if the American comes to visit her at the Roland Garros, which she has won twice in the past.

“But for Wimbledon, if you want to watch me, first week only. Cause’ second week it’s possible that I won’t be there anymore. French is more secure, for sure.”
