Danielle Collins vs Maria Sakkari: 2023 Canadian Open Montreal - Preview & Prediction

| by Evita Mueller

Danielle Collins is back to winning ways after beating Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Canadian Open, and her reward is playing Maria Sakkari.

It's not the best reward, frankly, but the American won't mind it as she's been missing these types of scenarios. Being able to compete on the court regularly and actually win matches means a lot, so she won't mind.

It was a good start, a win over Elina Svitolina for the 3rd win at the WTA 1000 event. She had to play the qualifiers which tell you all you need to know about how far she's fallen due to her injury problems. Sakkari also had problems for much of this year, but she, too, is in good form right now.

A run to the final in Washington should have certainly boosted her confidence before this match, even if she was beaten easily by Coco Gauff in the final of the WTA 500 competition.

Head-to-head

They played two matches so far, and both of those were won by Sakkari. The first one came in 2018, and it was a 3-set win for the Greek player, while the second one happened last year in Guadalajara. That match was also a 3-set win for Sakkari, so it's pretty clear that they tend to play close matches.

Prediction

In fairness, this one looks like a very close one as well because both are playing well, but both are pretty streaky too. That allows for the momentum to change often, which should make for an exciting watch. Collins has been impressive in Montreal, and she can win the match.

Sakkari is playing really well but she's certainly beatable and Collins has all the tools to make it happen on courts like the one in Toronto. These last few wins certainly didn't hurt either.

Prediction: Danielle Collins to win in three sets.
