Caroline Wozniacki vs Coco Gauff: 2023 US Open - Preview & Prediction

| by Evita Mueller

A bombastic matchup at the 2023 US Open is coming up as Coco Gauff will take on former WTA's number one Caroline Wozniacki.

A proper clash of the past and the future will unfold at the US Open, even though the current level of Caroline Wozniacki is more than worthy of being called the present of tennis. A superb comeback win over Jennifer Brady once again proved that she's back, but the most challenging test will come against Gauff.

The American has been one of the best-performing players on Tour in recent weeks, winning the Cincinnati Masters and playing just great tennis overall. Her US Open run has been very exciting as she dropped sets in two of the matches she played.

Be assured that Wozniacki will fancy her chances, and the tremendous abundance of experience might come in handy against Gauff, who is still beatable.

Head-to-head:

They never played before as Gauff only emerged when Wozniacki's career was slowly coming to an end, but the return of the Dane will give us a chance to finally see this matchup. It's an interesting one on paper as the Dane has more chances than a lot of people would like to believe.

Prediction:

Under the new guidance, Gauff has been demonstrating a more attacking style of play. She's still on every ball sending it back, but it's coming with a lot more heat than we're used to it. It's a conscientious effort from the American to play more attacking in line with the modern tennis style.

It works in theory, but against Wozniacki it could backfire if the Dane remains fresh enough to engage in long rallies with the American. There is no reason to believe that she couldn't beat Gauff as crazy as that sounds. I actually think that we're going to see three sets here, with Gauff in the end pulling through.

Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in three sets.
