After the first major of the season, players will move to different parts of the world for following WTA events, and one of those is held in France.
The 2023 Lyon Open will be held at the Palais des Sports Gerland from January 30th - February 5th. The event was played already three times before, and it was won by Sofia Kenin, Clara Tauson, and Shuai Zhang. While the first two will not compete in France in 2023, Zhang will defend her title.
She is the second-seeded and will begin against Madison Brengle from the United States. But she will be facing a difficult task on her way to defending the title. The only Top 10 player in the draw, and certainly a home crowd favourite, Caroline Garcia, is the first-seeded player at the event.
The Frenchwoman won the WTA year-end event in 2022, and she will want to show her craft also in front of the fans in France at this WTA 250 event in Lyon. In the first round, Garcia will face off against Tereza Martincova from the Czech Republic.
But there are many more interesting names in the draw. Alize Cornet, who will be also supported by French fans, is the third-seeded and she will meet Camila Osorio in the first round.
Former world no. 1, Garbine Muguruza will also take part in the event, and she will begin against one of the qualifiers. One of the most interesting first-round matches will see the fourth-seeded Petra Martic and Kristina Mladenovic from France facing off.
A number of young players will also compete in France, and one of the most interesting names in the draw is Alycia Parks. The 22-year-old American will play against Julia Grabher.
