Brenda Fruhvirtova bested Ana Bogdan to start her 2024 Australian Open main draw campaign, and it was a winning start.
The 16-year-old Czech player had to go through the qualifying to get into the main draw, but she bested all of her opponents without any major difficulties and made it into the main draw of the 2024 Australian Open, as one of many teenage prodigies.
There are three players who are 16 in the women's draw, and they will all attempt to write their own history, but for now, it was Fruhvirtova, who rewrote the history tables after her first-round win.
The start of the match was nervous for the teenager, who just couldn't trouble her opponent on return, and when serving, the Czech player also experienced problems, resulting in a quick first-set win for Bogdan, 6-2.
But as the match went on the youngster started showing why she's one of the most talented players of her generation, breaking her opponent at the start of the second set. However, she immediately lost the break and at 4-4, the Romanian got very close to winning as she had a break point to go into a 5-4 lead and serve for the match.
Thanks to an incredible series of points, Fruhvirtova was able to avoid that scenario, winning seven of the following eight rallies to win the second set 6-4.
After winning the second set and sending the match into the decider, the third set was dominated by the Czech player. She jumped out on a quick 5-1 lead, but the teenager had problems closing out the match as she needed five match points and three games to do that.
Eventually, Fruhvirtova won the match, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to record her first-ever Grand Slam main draw win, and also become the youngest woman to win a singles main draw match in Melbourne since Coco Gauff in 2020.
