World number two Novak Djokovic is back on the practice courts, almost three weeks since his last official match.
Djokovic is preparing to travel to the United States for the first time since the summer of 2021 when his bid for a Calendar Grand Slam fell short at the final hurdle. Since then, a Covid-19 ban was imposed on all unvaccinated foreign travelers.
Those restrictions were lifted in May this year, which would enable unvaccinated Djokovic to touch down on US soil in the next few days. Djokovic stepped up his preparations for the American hard courts by practicing in Montenegro in a video shared by reputable Belgrade-based journalist Sasa Ozmo.
It's the first time that we have caught a glimpse of Djokovic on the tennis courts since his Wimbledon finals defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in mid-July. Djokovic elected to give the Canadian Open amiss this week and will instead play one tuneup event before the US Open - next week's Cincinnati Masters.
The Serbian star will be the second seed in Mason, Ohio, and depending on results in Toronto, he might still retain faint hopes of reclaiming the number-one ranking on the ATP Tour from Carlos Alcaraz. While it is mathematically possible, an Alcaraz title win in Canada would effectively end Djokovic's bid for getting the top seed at Flushing Meadows.
As he embarks to the summer's hard courts in Cincinnati, Djokovic's clothing sponsor, Lacoste, and footwear sponsor Asics, recently unveiled his new apparel for the US swing. Head Tennis also unveiled Djokovic's latest racket design today on their Instagram page.
Djokovic's schedule is subject to change these days but admitted he will play at the Davis Cup next month, which would come almost immediately after the conclusion of the US Open. He will aim to steer his country into the Davis Cup Finals at the end of the regular season.
