Tommy Paul was forced to retire from his second-round match at the 2024 Miami Open due to a nasty ankle roll.
The past few days have been far from ideal for the American player. He reached the Indian Wells Open semi-final, which was, of course, a great achievement at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
However, he injured himself during the match against Daniil Medvedev, rolling his ankle during the second set, after winning the first, and that ended his chances of reaching the final in Indian Wells.
Still, he moved to Miami to compete at the second ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season, and the draw was nice to him, taking an inexperienced player in his first match at the tournament.
Martin Damm is a 20 years old tennis player from the United States, and he doesn't have much experience playing on this stage, as his current ranking is outside of the Top 200.
In the opening set, the 13th seed showed that he was the better player on the tennis court, breaking his opponent's serve early in the set, saving three break points later, and winning the opener easily 6-4.
Both player saved some break points in the second set, with Paul looking for another breakthrough to take the match in two sets, after it was postponed multiple times due to rain in Miami.
However, during the opening point of the four game, after quickly changing direction in an attempt to catch the ball from his opponent's racquet, Paul rolled his ankle, immediately limping towards his bench.
As a result, he was forced to retire from the match despite leading in it, sending Damm into the third round of the tournament, in which he will take on the winner of the match between Christopher O'Connell and the 21st-seeded Frances Tiafoe.
