Ben Shelton will participate in the 2023 Laver Cup, bringing some excitement to the event with his explosive play-style.
The American just had his best outing on the ATP Tour with a run at the US Open that ended at the hands of Novak Djokovic. His return to action will come about a week after that last match at the Laver Cup, where he hopes to bring some of his flashy play.
It excites him because he'll be surrounded by fellow players in a team environment where he can pick up some tricks along the way. He expects to leave the event as a more complete player compared to when he first arrived.
It’s going to be a really cool experience for me to be able to learn from two legends like the McEnroe brothers and be a part of Team World.
I have a lot of friends playing in the team and I’m really excited to be a part of this event that’s kind of legendary in the tennis world. Something that everyone aspires to be a part of. To be able to get the call up, to be able to compete for the team this year, I’m really excited.
Coming from College tennis, Shelton is well-versed in team play, and he really enjoys that type of setting. The Laver Cup is one of the rare events that will see him team up with fellow professionals, so it's just something that is very exciting. Many layers spoke about how much they enjoy the competition, so he's ready to see what it's all about.
I really enjoy team competitions, the team atmosphere, being able to interact with your teammates on the sidelines, seeing some of these guys that we only see as players kind of acting as coaches during the match, I think that’s a really cool aspect.
I think my level of tennis gets even better when I have teammates on the side cheering for me, so hopefully I can feed off that energy and use it to my advantage.
