Holger Rune began his 1st round Wimbledon match on Tuesday and finished it in the early evening of Wednesday but it was worth it, it was his first-ever win at Wimbledon.
Holger Rune was winless on grass before this year but he's already made a habit of winning on the surface. Some really solid performances at the Cinch Championships proved to him that he can actually play well on the surface and it snowballed from there.
He narrowly missed out on his first-ever grass final at the ATP 500 event but that didn't shake his confidence as he made a winning start at Wimbledon. Playing a Brit at Wimbledon is never an easy thing to do and Rune certainly had moments where he struggled against his opponent but with time he found solutions against George Loffhagen.
The opening set was very close, he needed a tiebreak to finish it off as neither player managed to break before that. Rune was the more aggressive player generally and had more winners but his opponent managed to keep the score close with a measured approach.
The second set was a bit easier for him as he took an early lead 3-0 and cruised from there. Loffhagen opted for a more aggressive approach but it didn't really work out as he had too many mistakes, especially at the start. He improved the stats by the end of the set but the damage was already done and Rune took it 6-3.
Rune looked pretty strong in the final set as well forcing his opponent to overhit far too often. An early break put him in a position to cruise smoothly toward the finish line and that's what he ultimately did by breaking his opponent once more. The final score was 7-6(4) 6-3 6-2 for the Dane who had 34 winners and only 20 unforced errors.
