Holger Rune didn't have many tennis heroes to look up to as a Dane until Caroline Wozniacki came around and won a Grand Slam.
Caroline Wozniacki is the most successful Danish tennis player ever and it's not even close. Her success certainly inspired plenty of young people in Denmark to pick up the racquet and she served as inspiration for Holger Rune as well.
In a feature that they did together at the Western & Southern Open, also called the Cincinnati Masters, Rune credits Wozniacki for inspiring him to chase his dreams the same way she chased her dreams. She paved that path and he hopes to leave a legacy in Danish tennis that will inspire even more people.
Nobody ever won a Grand Slam in singles in Denmark. So to see her do it was like, ‘Okay, maybe I can also do it one day’. It just makes the belief more real if you see somebody do it.
They've been familiar with each other for a while as they practised together before flying out to North America. In the same interview, the duo joked about that practice match that they played in Monaco a few weeks ago.
Wozniacki: “He also kicked my butt a couple of weeks ago.”
Rune: “I don't know about that!
Wozniacki: I've been on the other side of the ball and it's coming at you really fast.”
Rune also shared his first memory of watching Wozniacki with his family as well as watching her win the Australian Open, a huge moment for Danish tennis as it was the first Grand Slam ever won by a player from that country.
My first memory of her is watching her from TV and she was playing all the tournaments and we were on the couch, all the family, watching her. The memory that stands out was when she won the Australian Open. We were all watching. It was crazy to watch a Danish player win a Grand Slam in an incredible match, so it was a big inspiration.
