Reilly Opelka will return to the courts relatively soon, as the American confirmed his return at the 2024 Citi Open in Washington.
The American player has been in the news a lot in the past two years, but not many of those stories are related to tennis. He is a very outspoken person, and he chimed in on many topics while away from tennis due to an injury.
Luckily, though, Opelka will be busy with tennis in the coming weeks. His return is set for July 27th in Washington, D.C., at the Citi Open, where he will play for the first time since November of last year.
It was back then at the ATP Challenger tournament in Charlottesville that the American returned to playing one match before withdrawing from his next match.
There was hope that he would play earlier this year, but when he withdrew from the Australian Open, it was clear that he wasn't going to come back any time soon. The American has now spent the past six months working his way back, and his comeback should finally happen.
It's been a long time coming because outside of that challenger event, the last time he played in a Tour-level match was at the Citi Open back in 2022, so it's fitting that his return will happen at the same tournament.
It will be exactly two years since then, and it will be a great moment for the 26-year-old. He's been one of the better players in recent years, and he's certainly got something to prove after missing two years because of injuries.
The Citi Open is played on a very fast surface, so it's a good spot to kick off his comeback. The American will be hoping that by the time the US Open comes around, he'll be prepared to win matches.
