Holger Rune is no longer working with Boris Becker, but the Danish player dismissed suggestions that working with him was a mistake.
Many believed Rune and Becker were a match made in heaven, but now it's clear this was far from the truth. The German was hired by Rune last year to fix issues that caused him to lose multiple matches in a row.
It worked initially, as the young Dane found a good level again, even though he never quite hit the peak he had under Patrick Mouratoglou when the two won the Paris Masters together in 2022.
Eventually, the pair split up, but there seemed to be some lingering emotions. Becker recently had a very bizarre post about Rune's coaching situation, questioning whether the 21-year-old was still working with his French coach.
In the meantime, the Dane, who returned to Mouratoglou, publicly responded on X, telling Becker that he should have asked him directly, as they often speak privately, questioning his intentions to post the question publicly.
There seemed to be quite a bit of friction between them at the time, but the whole story is unknown to the wider public, and only they know how they feel about each other.
Ahead of the 2024 Hamburg Open, as per SpilXperten, the young Dane was asked whether working with Becker was a mistake, in light of their recent incident, and he dismissed suggestions that it was a mistake.
"No, no, no. It wasn’t a mistake at all (to hire Boris Becker). We agreed to try it out, and it worked super well. I came directly from a bad period, and he definitely helped me get back on track."
"I was a bit confused about the tweet he made, but there are no hard feelings. He was a fantastic player, one of the greatest legends in tennis. I definitely learned something from him."
Rune took the high road when asked about it, but perhaps there wasn't much to say. We don't know what exactly happened between them, as their split was quite unexpected. Still, the Danish player moved on and he will compete at the ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg with his mother and coach Kenneth Carlsen in the stands.
"It’s nice to have my mom with me. It’s always good to have family support, and my mom has followed me throughout my entire career, and she knows me really well. t’s always good, so it’s nice to have her with me. Kenneth (Carlsen) is here too, so I feel really good."
