Despite losing in the quarterfinals in singles and third round in doubles at the 2022 US Open and leaving the Flushing Meadows trophy-less, Nick Kyrgios will be happy when he looks at the ATP Rankings.
The 27-years-old Australian is having his best season in both singles in doubles. He played his first Grand Slam final at the 2022 Australian Open with Thanasi Kokkinakis and won it and a few months later, he played also his first Grand Slam singles final at the 2022 Wimbledon.
Already during the 2022 US Open, when Nick Kyrgios defeated Daniil Medvedev, he spoke about the rankings system and why he doesn't really care that much about it, when he stated: "I think the ranking system doesn't reward skill and form to be honest over a certain period of time," Kyrgios said.
"It definitely rewards consistency moreso because I've played 12 events and some of the people in front of me have played like 32. So obviously like it's almost impossible for me to be higher ranked unless I'm going deep in tournaments like this."
"So the rankings for me don't really matter and I feel like tonight was another message that rankings don't matter. I see number one next to his name and number 23 next to mine and that doesn't change anything for me. I don't care whether I'm seeded or not. It's nice, otherwise I could draw him first round. The rankings...I don't think they mean anything," concluded Kyrgios.
And despite stating that rankings don't mean anything, what's essentially true as the only thing that often matters is how the athlete performs on a given day, Nick Kyrgios became the highest-ranked Australian in singles and doubles.
Previously, Alex de Minaur and John Peers held these spots, but their colleague jumped them in both rankings. In singles, he entered the Top 20 again and got two places ahead of De Minaur and in doubles, Kyrgios moved to his new career-high 13th place and got one place ahead of Peers.
