Murray Looking to Bounce Back With Rune Exhibition Clash at Hurlingham Club

Andy Murray will face Holger Rune at the 2023 Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic as the Brit attempts to build form and fitness ahead of Wimbledon.

Murray's preparation for Wimbledon has been a rollercoaster ride as the former world number one cruised to title victories at the Surbiton Open and the Nottingham Open. However, the 36-year-old struggled with the step-up from the ATP Challenger level at the Cinch Championships at Queen's, when he was eliminated in the first round against finalist Alex de Minaur.

However, to try and bounce back from his difficult contest at Queen's, Murray has turned his attention to the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic, where he will face Rune at the exhibition event. World number six Rune will provide a stiff test for Murray as the Dane reached the semi-finals at Queen's before also losing to de Minaur.

Ultimately, the contest against Rune at the Hurlingham Tennis Club, which begins on June 27 and concludes on July 1, could be Murray's last chance at preparation before Wimbledon. Although, the two-time Wimbledon champion could face a potentially easier run at SW19 as he may still be in contention for a seeded place at the Grand Slam if enough competitors withdraw from the event.

After a strong showing at Queen's last week, Rune looks in good shape to push on to the latter stages at Wimbledon this year. The 20-year-old has been consistent recently after reaching the Roland Garros quarter-final and the Italian Open final, which he eventually lost to Danill Medvedev.

But it remains to be seen whether the Danish player can translate his performances on the highest grass court stage. Last season, Rune struggled at Wimbledon and was eliminated in the first round by Marcos Giron in straight sets.

In contrast, Murray has plenty of grass court experience, having reached the final three times. Although, his last run to the final came in 2016 when he last won in SW19.
