Gael Monfils talked about how his wife, Elina Svitolina, inspired him after she made a successful comeback.
The Frenchman hasn't played that much this year due to injury problems but he's set to make an appearance at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Los Angeles where he showered wife Elina Svitolina with praise.
It's been a while since the last time Monfils played, as he had some sensational heroics at Roland Garros. Unfortunately, that run didn't last long as his injury-prone body keeps breaking down at this age which was kind of expected and he's been away from the ATP Tour since then.
He's never been the healthiest to begin with so this isn't hugely surprising to most. During his time off, Monfils mostly spend time back home with his daughter as his wife, Elina Svitolina was doing amazing things both at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He spoke about her in Los Angeles, admitting that he's very proud of her.
Just proud of my wife, to be honest. How much work she has put in to be at that level. How much discipline she had. I was amazed by her strength, mentally, in some matches, to turn them around and then come back for her next match – I was proud and inspired. This is why I feel like a champion right now.
Spending time with his daughter has been a blessing for Monfils, who admitted that it's never too much. Even if he spends the entire day with his daughter, he still wants more. He'll be away from her for a while which will be tough to get used to after spending weeks with her.
She’s doing good, she’s growing up quite fast, actually. You are at home, but it’s a privilege to spend quality time as well, at home with your child. It can never be too much. It’s going to be a few weeks without her and it’s gonna be tough, but I feel like we will have more time in a few weeks.
