According to Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley, Nick Kyrgios will be back in 2024 at the home Grand Slam.
Nick Kyrgios only played one official match on the ATP Tour this year, and it happened at the Stuttgart Open, where he lost to Yibing Wu in the first round.
It wasn't a very good chance for Kyrgios, who complained to his team about pain in his knee, which wasn't a very good sign. He ultimately pulled out of all subsequent events, including Wimbledon, where he played in the previous year's final.
It was a terrible development for the Australian, who battled a knee injury since the start of the year. Then came a wrist injury, and it all went downhill from there as the Australian wasn't expected to play at all this year, especially after he missed the US Open.
Many expected him to make a return at the 2024 Australian Open, but it's not confirmed by tournament director Craig Tiley, who spoke to Kyrgios on the matter. Tiley confirmed it according to the Australian Publication The West.
The one thing great about Nick – he’s very transparent and very open about what he’s feeling and what he thinks … I personally believe in the communication that he’s motivated to come back and play in January.
The most interesting part about his comments on Kyrgios was the mention of a 'career-ending injury', which is the first time it was described by that. His absence obviously alluded to something complicated but those words certainly spooked many fans, especially as Tiley said that he's still 'getting over that'.
He loves playing, he loves playing here in front of his crowd, and he knows everyone wants him to play … it’s just a matter of his health. He’s had a significant injury and in many cases for many athletes it can be a career-ending injury.
He’s in the process of still getting over that, and I fully expect him to be here and be ready to play and provide us with the entertainment we want.
