Nick Kyrgios thinks he knows why Novak Djokovic sustained an injury issue at the 2024 United Cup.
Djokovic lost to Australian No. 1 Alex de Minaur at the event in straight sets. The 24-time Grand Slam champion had issues with his wrist during the match, but still finished the contest.
This is the second match in a row that the world No. 1 has encountered the problem. Djokovic also had a scare with his wrist in his previous singles match at the United Cup against Czech Republic's Jiri Lehecka.
Kyrgios has been away from tennis for a long time now. Repeated injury issues mean the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up has only played one match in the last 12 months, which was an unsuccessful comeback attempt in Stuttgart in June.
However, the 28-year-old has remained active by providing his opinions on social media, and Kyrgios released a tweet giving his view about why Djokovic picked up a wrist problem.
"Change of balls every week finally got to Novak's wrist. The ATP really need to do something about this problem. Players suffer all the time."
This is not a new issue or complaint among players on the ATP Tour. Many others have expressed concern about new balls being used each week, feeling that their bodies having to adapt every week creates injuries.
The world No. 1 has not said himself that the regular changing of balls caused the problem with his wrist. However, Kyrgios' theory is certainly not implausible since other players have not been happy either, although the injury for the 10-time Australian Open champion has happened at the start of the season.
Djokovic did address the concerns about his injury after the match. Hopefully, the problem does not escalate, and tennis fans are not deprived of the legendary Serbian's tennis at the Australian Open.
