Jannik Sinner vs Gael Monfils: 2024 Rotterdam Open - Preview & Prediction

| by Zachary Wimer

Jannik Sinner is back on the tennis court at the 2024 Rotterdam Open, and he hasn't missed a beat since the last time he played, but how will he fare against Gael Monfils?

Before Sinner arrived in Rotterdam, he last played at the Australian Open. He won that event, and many were curious about what would happen in his next tournament, especially after he opted to skip the Marseille Open.

He played well in his first match since that Grand Slam final, beating Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. Next up for him is Monfils, a player he knows very well, having played against him a few times already on the ATP Tour.

The French veteran is a former champion in Rotterdam and plays well indoors, so it's going to be a very interesting matchup.

Head-to-head:

Sinner is obviously a far better and younger player right now, but Monfils has his ways to frustrate opponents. They have played five times so far, and Sinner leads 4-1. The last match they played was last year in Toronto, and the Italian was able to win in three sets.

Generally, the Italian hasn't had too much trouble with Monfils in the past because Sinner is much better at attacking than the French player is defensively, especially in recent months.

Prediction:

When it comes to this match here, it's pretty certain that Sinner is likely going win it. There are very few things that Monfils can do to win this match, and it requires a perfect performance from him.

He played well against Denis Shapovalov in the previous round but would need to be much better here. He needs to serve well, return well, and use every chance he gets. He'll be in big trouble if he gets dragged into long rallies with Sinner.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in two sets.
