The former world number one, Jimmy Connors, was amused by Novak Djokovic's dismissal of Goran Ivanisevic, jokingly saying that it's always the coach's fault.
A few days ago, Djokovic let go of his long-time coach, Goran Ivanisevic. They were a formidable duo who achieved great things together, but the journey has now come to an end as the Serbian parted ways with the Croatian.
The news created shockwaves in the tennis community because it surprised many. Not only didn't it make sense to many people, but the timing of it was particularly odd because the season is about to shift to the clay courts.
Former ATP player Jimmy Connors found the situation mostly amusing because it's just funny to him how the coach always gets the blame. He talked about it in his most recent episode of the Advantage Connors podcast.
"Yeah, for a set of eyes, maybe. I think sometimes shaking it up... but isn't it funny, it's always the coach's fault? You know, 'Time to get rid of the coach!' You're with somebody, you're traveling with them week in, week out, and sitting and eating with them."
"And, you know, sometimes you need a break. You need to shake it up and see what else can come of it. Maybe Goran has taken him and given him as much as he can."
Connors knows the dynamics between a player and coach well, so he certainly speaks from a position of experience. Sometimes, players simply grow tired of someone and need something new. Ultimately, Djokovic is one of the best players of all time, and nothing about his game will likely see a dramatic change.
"And then, somebody else comes in, sees a little bit of this, because face it, you're dealing with one of the best players of all time. The changes and suggestions that you make are so tiny. The people from the stands and a lot of people who think they know tennis don't really see that."
