"I really want to be seeded in Grand Slams" - Murray to play one more grass-court tournament after Wimbledon

| by Zachary Wimer

Andy Murray didn’t have the type of Wimbledon he had hoped but he’s not done with grass as he’s heading to Newport to extend the grass-court part of the season.

Before the third Grand Slam of the season, Murray reached the final in Stuttgart and was hoping to have a good run also at the Wimbledon Championships where he won already twice before.

However, he had lost in the second round of the tournament, and now, the British player decided to play one more grass-court tournament. Former World No. 1 received a wild card for the 2022 Newport Open, where he will be one of the biggest favorites.

Murray is still trying his best to really find his best tennis, and while it’s a process that hasn’t really yielded any major results yet, the British player is certain that he can do it.

One thing that has bothered him quite a bit in recent times is not being seeded at the events. Besides the practical issues of having tougher draws, it’s generally been a goal of his before he set out on this journey to prove to himself and to everybody else that he can still play at a high level.

It’s a tricky goal because many players are fighting for the same thing, but Murray will certainly have a chance. With the US Open quickly approaching, the British player has more time to secure a seeding spot.

He hopes that by the time the US Open rolls around, he could be in that position, and a good jump towards that could be done at the Newport Open if he plays well.

"I really want to try and improve my ranking to a level where I’m getting seeded in slams. That was a goal of mine sort of post Miami. I’ve spoken to my team a lot about that, and that’s something that I want to try and put myself in a position hopefully come the US Open."

Murray further commented that if he doesn’t become a seed for the US Open, then he’ll aim for the seeding spot at the Australian Open, which is another Grand Slam tournament in the calendar.

"If not the US Open, then going into the Australian Open next year where I’m seeded again. That means obviously I’ll need to be out there competing and winning matches because it does make, like I said, things trickier."
